The Shakers began as a small band of dissenting Protestants. They became known as the "Shaking Quakers" because often during worship and singing, their bodies would shake and move. In 1774, the Shakers left England and emigrated to settle in New York and from there, the Shaker movement spread throughout the northeast and as far west as Kentucky and Ohio. There are still Shaker communes in America today.
Shaker communities withdrew themselves from the World, held all property in common, working at perfecting various crafts and building. The sisters and brothers shared leadership and responsibilities equally. Their goal was "hands to work and hearts to God," and their ideal lifestyle was simplicity
The Shakers left us a large number of songs -- some say a few thousand! Many of the poems and music were "received" in dream, trance or vision; and of course , many songs were consciously composed.
The Shakers also at times used traditional melodies to create new tunes. A singer could change a known melody into a dance, or improvise a section of a melody to make it fit one of their poems, or link one tune with another, or simply create a totally new song from well known tunes.
